Hello to everyone!  I’m only 37, but I feel as though I fit in here as I’ve been told too many times to count that I’m “old school.” I bought my first “Old Guys Rule” shirt last year when I was on a trip to Costa Rica with a bunch of kids in their early 20’s who looked at me as the old man of the trip.  The purchase was kind of a joke, along with the comments that I intended to get the best waves each day since I have been surfing since before most of them were born.  But, as they say, with age comes experience.  I, on my trusty 9’1” McTavish, usually found myself on the best waves.

As it stands now, I’m rehabbing a serious knee injury and subsequent surgery, so I’m feeling older than ever since I just started walking again after four months on crutches and any old lady with a walker can kick my butt!

I just wanted to say how much I love the product and the attitude behind it.  I surf San O a lot and I always pick the most grizzled old genius in the water to sit next to out there so I can at least get the second wave of the set!  Now if I could just bbq a steak properly…

Cheers to all-
Chris

Hi Chris and thanks for your support of Old Guys Rule. Sorry to hear about the knee. On the good side the surf hasn’t been real good since February. The water is pretty nice right now, but the surf has been lacking. Hopefully you’ll be back out there soon and get your place back in the pecking order. We really appreciate encouraging letters from guys like yourself. Thanks for spreading the word and sharing all the good things that come with age. I too surf San O on a regular basis and am the 2nd generation in our family to do so. I hope you heal quickly and can come out and once again dominate the line up.

Keep Surfin’, TOG- The Old Guy

Old guys rule, because we can honestly say “been there! ... done that!”
Saw the Beatles in Candlestick, was at People’s Park in Berkeley, Ravi Shankar in Santa Barbara, Billy Graham’s “days on the green”, Grateful Dead, Santana too many times to count, Winterland, etc and etc. College at SLO and lived in Morro Bay.. what a great place to a student. I tried my best to not let classes interfere with my college education. Became an Art Director… moved east, became a Creative Director… moved farther east, became Dir. of Creative Services moved south. Nothing but memories now, and I don’t bother to share the details with my kids, (even though they think they’re the first to be cool) and I’ve even gone as far as forbid my brothers from telling them stories of those days. I just watch the sunset and smile quietly and wear my t-shirts proudly! It just feels good.. doesn’t it?
If you guys ever need knew designs from an original old guy, let me know, be happy to help.

Dear Roundhouse, about the steak. Spend the money and get a good quality grill. Stainless steel lasts longer and is easy to clean. I love the grill stores and I just got a bunch of grilling papiphnalia for Christmas so I’m a happy old guy.
My advice is to start with a good cut of meat (Filet Mignon, or NY Strip are my favorites.) and marinate it. You can go on-line and get some good marinade recipies that suit your taste. I cook “low and slow”. Low heat, cook longer works best for me. If you get a gas grill, buy a smoker box for soaked wood chips. This really adds flavor to the meat and it drives the neighbors into a feeding frenzy. Finally don’t be afraid to experiment and it always never hurts to drink beer while cooking.
